Beleza to Host Special Three-Day Tent Sale of Fair Trade Hand-Woven Rugs from Istanbul

Announcing a special three-day tent sale of hand-woven rugs from Istanbul, created by one the shop’s featured artisan groups!

These unique pieces have been collected from different villages around Turkey and other regions of the Orient. Each piece is hand-made and vegetable dyed. Rugs as small as 3’’x5’’ are available as well as area rugs up to 12’’x16’’. Runners and round pieces will also be featured in the collection. Colors and style vary by piece but the collection will incude Ottoman Oushaks, Old Kayseris, Sultanabads, Herekes, special Caucasian and Anatolian nomadic pieces, Turkomans and many more styles. Materials used to make these rugs also vary by piece; some woven of pure silk, others are silk and wool, wool on cotton, or one hundred percent wool.

We have three special guests coming to the Raleigh area for a presentation on new developments in Tiny Hands International's anti-trafficking ministry. APRIL 30 - HELP NEEDED for Continued Tornado Relief Work

Good morning,

The tornado assistance center we have been focusing on at Powell Elementary School in one of the hardest hit areas of Raleigh had to close because classes started back today. This effort, lead by the PTO in that school, was staffed by teachers, parents and community volunteers who did a remarkable job. There are no words to describe the physical and emotional support they provided so many people.

Now we are continuing to focus on the immediate needs and now beginning to plan for the obvious long term needs.

At the store, we will still collect nonperishable foods, cleaning supplies, clothes and dish detergents, diapers and other baby needs, baby food, bleach, clothing, shoes, linens, and toiletries. These are being delivered to people on a daily basis.

In addition, we are partnering with The Green Chair (http://www.thegreenchair.org/) where we have warehouse space to accommodate collecting a large amount of relief items. We know the founders, Jackie Craig and Beth Smoot, well and are completely confident in this partnership. Please see the announcement posted here about even more needs such as furniture, etc. that can be delivered to this warehouse this Saturday. Please read about this outstanding organization at their web site. They are located about 2 miles from our store on Capital Blvd.

You can help by contributing to the Green Chair Rebuild Raleigh Donation Drive on Saturday, April 30th from 9 am - 1pm.

We will be collecting non-perishable food, diapers, baby formula, toiletries, cleaning products and gently-used household items (including gently used furniture, cookware, linens, microwaves, dishware and lamps. See our Donations Page for a full description of what we furnishings accept).

We also need VOLUNTEERS that Saturday to help sort and pack. To assist with the Donations Drive, please register on our Volunteer Page.

NEEDS GROWING...Tornado Relief Update

I just returned from delivering the food, clothing and other items collected at the store to Powell Elementary School where this group of volunteers is operating. They are teachers and parents in the school. This school serves the families most hard in the area including Stoneybrook where some children lost their lives. This group of volunteers is working so hard to provide meals, food, clothing and information about FEMA etc. We have talked to MERCI and agreed to focus on supporting this relief effort. We know there are many places damaged but focusing on one will make our support more effective. If we learn that we have done all needed, we will redirect the resources you are providing.

URGENT NEEDS NOW at Powell Elementary...Produce, batteries, flashlights, peanut butter, toiletries, and then the rest of what's on the list below.

Day One (4/19) of our Tornado Restoration Resource Station was a HUGE success! We had many refreshments donated to distribute to victims & volunteers. Many of our Powell students who live in the neighborhood were visiting community members to let them know we were at the school and encourage them to stop by. We were able to get a better idea of the items that people in the community need. We also made some great contacts with community members to build on our efforts and have started coordinating with them to strengthen our efforts and broaden our reach. Likely the biggest success is the impact we have already made on the people of this community. Residents were so happy and thankful we were available and planning to remain a presence in the neighborhood for as long as we can.

Day Two (4/20) goals will be to distribute information more widely and comprehensively and tap into even more resources. We will operate the station from 7am to dusk. We are hoping to host nightly community dinners @ 6:30 pm beginning tomorrow evening and are coordinating with area churches and other organizations to be able to do so. These dinners will provide families with at least one hot meal for the day as well as some much needed fellowship where they can share stories, decompress, and just breath. If you know of a business or organization that might be able to assist with these dinners, please let us know ASAP so we can coordinate accordingly.

Following are some needed items that can be donated for redistribution at the Tornado Restoration Resource Station:

1. · Basic items to restock refrigerators such as milk, eggs, lunch meats, etc. These would need to be taken to the collection site since we don't have refrigeration capability. Contact phone number is below.
2. · Household cleaning products such as brooms, mops, rags, all purpose cleaner, etc.
3. · Hot meals for approximately 75 households.
4. · New undergarments for male & female in any and all sizes as well as personal hygiene items
5. · Pantry items such as cereals, pastas, sauces, etc.
6. · Drinks, both individual servings & bulk.
7. · Batteries, light bulbs, toilet paper, facial tissue, paper towels
8. · Disposable plates, utensils, cups.·
9. Take-out containers for hot meals.
10. · Fresh produce
11· Work gloves, gasoline/oil for chain saws and other equipment
12. Gift cards

Our goal is to keep the station open from 7am to dusk for as long as we can sustain the volunteer efforts and donations, which will hopefully be until people in the community are really on the way to be back on their feet. In all reality, we are looking at many weeks. We always need bodies to man the station and distribute donations and information.

The devastation in the neighborhood is overwhelming. Photos and commentation cannot do it justice. Please bring donations or even just a few minutes of your time to talk with the neighbors. Tragedies such as this truly put things into perspective and remind us what is really important in life.

I just learned of a need for tomorrow morning (Wednesday, April 20)!

The city emergency management is trying to get a team of 200 people to work in a neighborhood. We will be doing debris removal in Lions Park in North Raleigh. We will meet at 516 Dennis Avenue at 10 and work until 4 (or thereabouts). Please wear close-toed shoes, bring gloves, rakes (if you have them), and plastic bags (if you can) to bag debris. If you are certified as a chain saw user, please bring your chainsaws. I do need a number count, so if you can help, please email me directly at joelaine@nccumc.org at once so I am certain we have this request from the city government covered.

Tornado Relief Supplies and Volunteers Needed

We have checked with local relief being handled through MERCI, the organization with whom we worked to collect and ship items to Haiti after the earthquake last year. Here's what you can help by donating and dropping at the store.

We will collect food, clothing and shoes, and:
* nonperishable food
* clothing clearly labeled as to size and gender - This is the only way we can accept clothes.

* plastic roofing nails (obtain at any home improvement store)

Please remember, Together We Can, Inc will provide tax credit documentation for your donations. If you purchase items, you can simply attach your receipt to the tax form provided at Beleza.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Volunteers able to help with clean-up efforts are asked to call MERCI at 888-440-9167 or 919-739-9167.

We will accept items at least through May 15. It will take a long time for some of these families to have a home to return to where they can use the food and clothing. There is an immediate need but there will be a need for some time to come. We will keep you informed.

Most everyone is aware that areas in Pakistan were devastated by flooding that started in July, 2010. Now the people are in need of basics. I am a member of West Raleigh Rotary International. The American Red Cross has agreed to ship shoes to Pakistan for Rotary International FREE! The only requirement is that we must collect 30,000 pairs. We're close to 20,000 pairs already. Several Rotary clubs are working on this project.

Any style or size of gently used shoes is fine except NO HIGH HEELS. Children shoes are a priority but adult shoes are desperately needed as well. We have heard stories of how people there are literally wrapping their feet in scraps of cloth and paper to try to deal with the cold. If you will help, just drop the shoes at the store. You are invited to join others in the Raleigh community to celebrate the hope and commemorate the lives of the Haitian community that were lost and those who survived but were changed forever. Since so many of you were so kind to bring literally tons of supplies to Beleza for us to arrange to be shipped to Haiti, we wanted to include you in this event.

The event will include incredible visual and audio presentations, remarks by Regine Jean-Baptiste who is a Haitian studying at Duke and lost family in the earthquake, special music and events planned to highlight the service all of us are providing to the people who are rebuilding and renewing their country and their dreams.

This event is free and no fund raising will be involved.

JUST ARRIVED!

Haiti Update
Many of our customers contributed needed items generously during the first few weeks after the January 12 earthquake. Philip helped lead a medical services team in March 2010. You can read about that trip at the Events link for Together We Can, Inc.

Together We Can (TWC) is the nonprofit Philip and his friend, Randy Wiersma, started to facilitate service to people outside the USA and locally as well by providing a network for service minded individuals and a means for tax credit for charitable donations. Please read about TWC at the web site.

He and Randy are leading another team in January of 2011. This team will include about 25 people some of whom will do medical service and others will be helping build an orphanage, House of Hope, that is already started. You can read about House of Hope at the TWC web site.

If you want to help, we need small bars of soap (hotel/motel size is perfect), small containers of hand sanitizer (no more than 3 ounces) to help combat the cholera, small tubes of hand lotion, and reading glasses that are for purchase at drug stores, etc. If you wish to help with these items, drop them at the store. Feel free to request a form to provide tax credit from TWC.

Hello to all Beleza customers,
We trust you are finding ways to survive this heat if you are in North Carolina!

First of all, we have not forgotten about the outreach work in Haiti. We are happy to report that much progress is being made but there are still needs. For a report on the medical trip that Philip organized and led, check the link Haiti Medical Trip at Together We Can, Inc.

We cannot thank those of you who donated to this trip enough. Together We Can, Inc.(TWC) is not a part of Beleza. The connection to Beleza and TWC is that Philip and Sara helped found TWC in order to facilitate meaningful relief work through a nonprofit that has no overhead costs or staffing.

More times than we can begin to know, people commented on how outstanding and almost unbelievable the outpouring of donations and support was from our customers and their friends for about 6 weeks immediately after the earthquake. We still receive items occasionally and make sure they are delivered to Haiti.

Now we are sharing with you more about Haiti and things we can all do to continue to help.

If any of you are interested in traveling to Haiti to work as a volunteer in a host of ways, TWC can definitely facilitate this and serve as your connection to accommodations in a great location with outstanding individuals to guide you in your service. Groups are easier to facilitate than individuals, but we will be glad to assist anyone.

NEEDED in HAITI
We have a new and a continued need. Reading glasses, the kind you can purchase very cheaply, are greatly needed. Also, gently used good condition towels are still needed. If you would like to help with these items, please drop them off at the store.

Wings of Hope, an orphanage for handicapped children with the Saint Joseph's Boys Homes, needs a converter which will store electricity when the power is on. This device enables the folks directing this orphanage to provide for the children when there is no power. This device will cost about $500. Donations can be sent to TWC or left at the store and identified for this device.

NEEDED in RALEIGH
Second, Together We Can, Inc. is committed to working in our local community to assist with projects. The New Bern House, a home for emergency housing as well as housing for individuals in crisis, is a former retirement home and is located on New Bern Avenue about three blocks from the Capitol. This facility is managed by Sylvia Wiggins, the Director of Helping Hand Missions. The rooms desperately need ceiling fans with lights.

If you have a ceiling fan with lights in a garage or closet and you are willing to donate it to this project, please drop it by Beleza. If you wish to purchase a ceiling fan with light to donate, that is wonderful.

All donations are tax deductible because TWC is a 501(c)3 charitable nonprofit. When you drop off items, just ask for a documentation form.

Sara and I grow large amounts of herbs including all kinds of mints, chives, basil, oregano, and much more. This Saturday, June 12, we are bringing our excess to the store to give away. So it's FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED until they run out. We did this last year and they go fast!

We arrived home from our trip to Turkey and India Sunday morning. We're still unpacking what we purchased and waiting for some of it to arrive. We made some amazing finds. We'll be showing you more in later emails.

An Update from P. Dail and Sara's Travels!

On Monday evening, P. Dail and Sara were in Denizli, Turkey and had just returned from 2 days at the Mediterranean of which one day was spent sailing around on a cruise boat for about 8 hours... it's a "tough life", noted P. Dail!

Here's the rest of P. Dail's tails from the trip so far:

We spent the first 5 days in Istanbul and saw all the famous sites as well as spent 2 days looking for new items. When we return tomorrow, we're going to the city where the new jewelry I describe later in this email, the Osmanli jewelry, is made. We'll take pictures of the workplace then.

Ali Bozkus - we bought jewelry from him we are bringing with us in Istanbul

Ali Kara - we bought some incredible new scarves from him that will be home around June 8. His family makes them. Family business is located in Bursa, Turkey.

All these next ladies were found at a wonderful Saturday morning Women's Bazaar that runs from about 10 to 4 each Saturday in Denizli. A friend of ours had told us about this and we went. These three ladies were who we thought we could best work with and thus we selected items from them.

Haiti Disaster - Update #5

We are still receiving support from our customers for the Haiti outreach. We still have a definite need for vitamins, especially chewable forms, pain medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen (not aspirin), skin rash ointments especially those with hydrocortisone, and benadryl tablets. Please remember that donations are eligible for tax credit through Together We Can, Inc. All donations for Haiti received by the end of February can still be used on your 2009 tax returns.

We need these by March 15 since the medical team that Philip is taking to Haiti is leaving March 20. This team has already purchased all medications that are not over-the-counter and so this help would be great! Just drop this by the store.

MERCI in Goldsboro is still shipping items and will be for a long time. You can see their list of items here. You can continue to bring these items to Beleza.

Monday morning Philip met with a woman who had just returned from three weeks of helping set up temporary clinics in Haiti. She told him about a woman who walked in with her lower arm wrapped in dirty strips of cloth. When asked about her arm, she said it hurt a little. When the medical personnel looked at her arm, they saw mostly exposed bone and not much else. She had received no medical attention since the earthquake. They sent her for an amputation. How this woman is alive is hard to understand. This just points to what we all know. There will be need for caring support in this country for a long time.

Redress 2010 is Coming!

We are excited to announce that Together We Can, Inc (TWC), a nonprofit, will provide tax credit documentation for all items you donated through Beleza. Click on Together We Can to learn about TWC.

Until TWC establishes its own web site, Beleza is providing them web support. TWC received official notification granting nonprofit 501(c)3 status on Monday, February 8, retroactive to September 8, 2009 when we first applied for this status. We waited for the letter to arrive to announce this because we wanted to make sure, even though we had been told we would be approved, that the approval was official. We are excited that we can now provide this tax credit for all those who donate money or items to any service outreach which TWC, Inc. supports.

The first official outreach is to Haiti, including providing medical supplies for the team of doctors and nurses Philip will accompany to Haiti on March 20.

Any donations for Haiti received by February 28, 2010, can be included in your 2009 tax preparation.

Please share this information with anyone you know who may have donated items through Beleza. We will supply documentation for all who have sent us checks or left cash. Your canceled check is also sufficient for this. If you want tax credit for these items, we would need to following information emailed to us at togetherwecaninc@yahoo.com.

On March 20, eight people are landing in Haiti to provide medical care for a community in Citie Soleil, the poorest part of Port au Prince. We are returning March 27. Philip Dail from NCSU who along with his wife, Sara, owns Beleza began planning this trip while he was in Haiti, long before the earthquake. He visited Haiti in August and became friends with some awesome people including Pastor Leon Dorleans who directs four community centers there with the support of Haiti Outreach Ministries. (http://www.haitioutreachministries.org/) These eight people include three doctors, two nurses, a second year medical school student as well as Philip and Randy Wiersma.

Philip and Randy are the team leaders and they formed a nonprofit last year to make it easy for this kind of work to be supported by people who want to help. Their nonprofit is Together We Can, Inc and donations can be sent to Together We Can, Inc, 2014 Cameron Street, Raleigh, NC 27605. The team must purchase all the medical supplies needed and take these with them to Haiti.

Any size donation is much appreciated. All the people going are paying their own expenses so the donations will be used to pay for medications and do anything needed when the team arrives.

Haiti Disaster - Update #4

Eight days have passed since our last update. We continue to serve as a drop off for MERCI. Here is an excerpt from an email received January 26 from Jo Elaine Harris who has managed the collection for MERCI at Clayton."Many thousands of pounds of our medical supplies, food and water are on the ground and being used. While some agencies and groups are unable to get their materials there, we are successful. Keep the collections coming! On behalf of the literally thousands of people whose lives have been positively impacted because of your willingness to collect and deliver goods, I thank you."

The Clayton collection point has closed but we are excited that Edenton Street United Methodist Church where Sara and I attend is now one collection point here in Raleigh. Feel free to continue to drop items at the store. Please see check here, Items Needed, to see what is needed. We are open 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 on Sunday.

Food and medical supplies are high priorities. Clothing is not being shipped now since the people are not in living conditions that will allow for accumulation of goods.

To date we have delivered about 28 pick up sized loads of good from you to the people in Haiti through Merci. We will continue to collect and deliver your gifts until we are told to stop.

On March 20, Philip is leading a team of doctors and nurses to Haiti. This trip was planned long before the earthquake.Please read here Global Outreach for more information. The team will need to carry all needed medical supplies. We are expecting six doctors and six nurses to go. We will be serving people in the poorest parts of Port au Prince using clinics operated by Haiti Outreach Ministries. The director of this organization in Haiti, Pastor Leon Dorleans, is a good friend of ours. He does remarkable service.

We delivered our 12th truckload of items today (yesterday, 1/20/2010). Now we are being asked to focus on specific food items. You can continue to donate other items from previous emails. Clothing is not a high priority now. More and more is being shipped now. Philip has actually had facebook communication with one of the boys from St. Joseph's where he stayed and that is now destroyed.

You are all AWESOME and AMAZING for your support. But once more, we're not surprised because we know our customers are caring and good people.

Haiti Disaster - Update #2

Beleza is located at 2014 Cameron Street, Raleigh, NC in Cameron Village - 1 door down from Baskin Robbins and on the front of the strip with the K&W on the side.

Hours for drop off: 10:00am until 6:00pm - Monday through Saturday, 1:00pm until 5:00pm - Sunday.

At this time, we will send an email when we STOP collecting. The shipments from MERCI are going out to Haiti almost daily through chartered planes and on military cargo planes.

Load # 7 was just delivered. This is a quick email to provide information about immediate needs.

Pack all of this in a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. No money, notes, religious or political literature or any other items are to be placed in the kits.

The response from our initial email about collecting items needed for Haiti has only proven what we knew to be true - we are privileged to have a customer base in Beleza, comprised of caring, concerned, and generous people of action!

We have delivered 6 truck loads of goods to the drop site in Clayton since Thursday. You have sent our email to countless other connections. Today we even had a phone call from Ontario. You are AMAZING but not surprising. Feel free to send this email to others.

This summer Philip stayed at St. Joseph's Boys Home in Petionville. Check www.HeartsWithHaiti.com to read some first hand accounts. This orphanage was featured on ABC World News Tonight Sunday evening.

Philip just left the drop site in Clayton for MERCI. While he was there, one of the individuals directly involved in arranging for transporting the goods arrived to pick up all available medical supplies. He explained that 4 chartered planes were ready to start transporting medical items and food tomorrow morning. The first plane was sent on Friday. While distribution of goods is difficult right now, it is starting to be more successful. He shared that his sources were telling of goods being delivered and distributed. He stressed that as this became more successful, it would be more critical for the goods to be in place for distribution. MERCI has an arrangement with the military and are allowed to pack boxes of relief items in the transport planes as well.

We still encourage you to donate funds as well. We know it is hard to decide what agency is the best and we know many good agencies exist to support. Sending goods as we are doing is also extremely important since these goods are sorted, packaged, and labeled for use. This helps the process since the amount of time required to purchase this amount of goods, let alone the staff to do it, would be staggering.

Update Specifics - Right now medical supplies, food and water are the first priority items to be transported and items will be shipped in priority of need. All of the items below are in the high priority needs category and will be shipped as soon as possible.

This MERCI collection site will be in operation at least through Friday of this week and is open 8 am to 5 pm daily. The address is 501 Atkinson Street, Clayton, NC 27520. You will see signs once you turn off highway 70 on this street. We will be making deliveries everyday as needed so don't hesitate to drop items at the store.

Volunteers are needed to sort and pack. You only need to go and offer. So feel free to go to the address above and help!

Haiti Disaster - Beleza Connection

We are confident all of our customers have heard about the enormous tragedy in Haiti. Philip was there in early August and brought back some items for the store from a family. While he was there he worked in an orphanage called St. Josephs and he became involved with a local pastor who has built clinics, schools, and churches - entire community centers- for the poorest in Haiti. The orphanage is destroyed as are some of the clinics and part of the clinics, etc. All the children in the orphanage are alive. He had a medical team scheduled to go on March 20.

When a tragedy like this strikes, we all want to help and also to make the best decisions we can about agencies we support. We know there is no limit to ways to agencies through which to help, but we wanted to provide an easy way for you to consider. The giving of money is crucial but right now there is a dire need for items to be placed in the hands of the people. Philip's experience there validates that even if we sent money directly to the people, the items they would need are not available for purchase.

We have confidence in a local agency in Goldsboro, NC, MERCI (http://www.merciumc.org/) which is sponsored by the United Methodist Church, to get goods in the hands of the people quickly. We are including an email from that agency below for you to read eye witness accounts but more to see the list of things needed.

If you want to donate any of these items to this cause, you can deliver them to Beleza and we will take the to Horne United Methodist Church in Clayton on a daily basis as needed.

We are all ok
Many Haitians are hurt or killed, 2 children in our community are dead. Keep us in prayer, especially the Haitians who have lost everything.

EVERYONE on the team is ok. Please PRAY. This is very severe. Haiti is not prepared for this event. The team was on a school bus (i believe going back to the camp) when the quake hit. They felt the bus shake, also saw houses going down around them. Haitians have rushed the camp (due to fear and panic) seeking medical help. There have been deaths and injuries. Mission to Haiti (who Helen is with) arrived yesterday. The number of medical people on this team was larger than usual. Thank God!!! The entire team is pitching in. One of the directors of the camp was "shocked and amazed"! He was rushing around to help the Haitians when he was paused to briefly talk to his family in Florida. PLEASE just pray! This is more wide-spread than 9-11.
The camp itself suffered minimal damage.

Another Report...
Four Haitians have died here at the camp. We are out of medications. We have heard that US military may be coming to help. Hope it is true.

Strong aftershocks continue. We have all moved outside where we sit among the injured. Our outside field is full of injured but we cannot help them all. It is a minute to minute thing. Our buildings have damage so as long as aftershocks continue, we will have to stay outside. It is difficult to hear the cries of the wounded. The children are the worst.

The guys on the construction team have the saws out making splints. We are tearing sheets making to secure splints and whatever. Thank the Lord of our faithful generator so we can continue to see. No power outside camp that we can tell. I have supplies in my room and they won't let me go get them!!!
